What evidence should an auditor ask for under AASB 2026-4?

An evidence index, a line item mapping, a paragraph switch-off checklist, the election decisions, a label register and the reconciliation tie-out. Each maps to a paragraph.

Start with the scope memo

The scope memo records the entity group, the reporting tier, the first affected period and the elections. Without it the rest of the file has no anchor, because the paragraph set depends on those facts.

Then the line item mapping

For a superannuation entity, map every relevant AASB 1056 line item to each primary statement and mark presented, combined or not applicable. That single schedule proves paragraphs Aus23.1 and AusB8.1, and it also defeats the argument that a line was dropped on a materiality judgement.

Then the switch-off checklist

List the AASB 18 paragraphs that paragraph Aus47.1 turns off and show that none was partially applied. Partial application of the category model is the likely defect, because a draft statement often keeps one familiar subtotal.

Then the election decisions

Each election needs a decision by an authorised person, a date and the period it applies from. An election that exists only in a conversation is not evidenced. The check returns a conditional answer until the election is made, which is the same discipline.

Then the label register

If an AASB 18 defined label is used with a different meaning, the register lists the label, the amount and the reason the label is faithful. Paragraph Aus11.1 permits the label, not a misleading label.

Then the reconciliation tie-out

Tie the reconciliation starting point to the statement of profit or loss and the cash flow statement in one working paper, for the current and comparative periods. The starting point change is the item most likely to be missed.

Questions

Is a policy note enough for an election?

No. The election needs a decision record with an owner and a date, and the note is the consequence, not the evidence.

Do comparatives need the same testing?

Yes. The comparative period is presented on a consistent basis, and the AASB 18 comparative requirements apply to the primary statements.

Can the auditor rely on the register?

The register is a planning aid. The auditor tests the entity evidence behind each row and reaches an independent conclusion.
